AFMR Awards
The AFMR is pleased to announce that it will again offer Clinical Research Training Fellowships for Medical Students for the summer of 2009 for Medical Students enrolled in accredited US Medical Schools. We urge you to encourage your medical students to apply and take advantage of this initiative.
Basic Features
- Fellowships will be 10 weeks in duration and will be focused in the areas of clinical research. For the purposes of this program, clinical research is defined broadly as studies of living human subjects, including the laboratory-based development of new forms of technology; studies of the mechanisms of human disease and evaluations of therapeutic interventions (which are known collectively as translational research); clinical trials, outcome studies, and health care research; and epidemiologic and behavioral studies (Nathan, 1998).
- Student applicants must be enrolled in and the proposed research must be completed at an accredited U.S. medical school.
- The research must be sponsored by and conducted under the supervision of a faculty member who is an active AFMR member, and who is able to provide mentorship and support for the student’s research during the fellowship period.
- In instances where a specific project has been clearly defined with a specific mentor at the time of application submission, this information should be contained in a letter of reference from the potential mentor.
- In instances where a mentor or a project have not been defined in advance of the application, successful applicants may contact the selection committee for a listing of AFMR members who are willing to be potential mentors. Applicants are encouraged to contact these members in advance of submitting their proposals. The final choice of mentors and projects in such instances will be subject to approval by the AFMR Executive Committee.
- Awardees will receive support stipends for a 10-week period for the summer of 2009.
- Applications are due Monday, April 3, 2009.
