Clinical Research Conference
The American Federation for Medical Research (AFMR) hosted a high-profile symposium that convened many of our nation’s foremost leaders and influencers in the Health Care sector. This all-day symposium, entitled The Current Crisis in Clinical Research: Where Do We Go?, took place on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 in Washington, D.C. The purpose of the symposium was to generate discussion and action for patient-oriented clinical research in the United States among the constituents who are in the strongest positions to stimulate much-needed change. Without the kind of change these leaders can bring about, the clinical research enterprise in the U.S. will continue to deteriorate, causing irreparable damage to the economy and the quality of medical care patients across the world receive for generations to come. Several panel discussions throughout the day included the following speakers:
-

How can we alter the future? Sum Up and Priorities for the Future Alan L. Buchman, MD, MSPH We are losing clinical investigators in American for several reasons: 1) there are increased pressures in academia to separate those who do research from those who see patients, 2) there is an increased demand of those in academia who see patients to increase clinical revenue and forgo clinical observations that could lead to meaningful research hypotheses, 3) there are fewer clinicians involved in meaningful clinical research, 4) the educational program to train the next generation of clinical investigators is insufficient and under-funded, 5) the infrastructure for clinical research has eroded, and the lack of publicly-supported research databases does not allow easy access of patients to clinical studies, 6) relatively little clinical investigation is funded via public sources, and 7) there are those who think clinical research is the purview of industry.
We are taking the first step in combating the crisis and identifying and enacting solutions.
Sincerely, Alan L. Buchman, MD, MSPH President, AFMR
